Amy Schumer's upcoming Hulu show LifeAndBeth will look at the relationship the actress and comedian had with her mother. 'My mom was really destructive and did really harmful stuff, and also I felt so special and loved growing up.'
Amy Schumer has said that her new Hulu series Life & Beth will explore the complicated real-life relationship she has with her mom. The comedy-drama series co-stars Michael Cera , who will portray a character called John. Schumer plays Beth, who forms an unlikely friendship with John after an accident causes her to have flashbacks to her teen years, leading her to change the direction of her life and to live more freely.
Schumer became known in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian, often appearing on Comedy Central and even getting her own comedy sketch show, Inside Amy Schumer, for which she won a Peabody Award and was nominated for a number of Emmys. The show came to an end after four seasons, but she's since starred in several comedy feature films such as I Feel Pretty and Snatched. She also made her feature film writing debut with the Judd Apatow-directed Trainwreck.
“My mom was really destructive and did really harmful stuff, and also I felt so special and loved growing up. And she’s been really fucking cool about all of it. She’s like, ‘I’m 73, I own my mistakes,’ and that’s the thing: My mom is insanely flawed and I also love her an insane amount.” Life & Beth will also apparently parallel Schumer's life in its romantic plot threads. Cera's character is very similar to Schumer's real-life husband, Chris Fischer. Cera even spent time with Fischer to study his behavior and the narrative reportedly mimics some of the same beats as Schumer and Fischer's real love story.
Life & Beth, which Schumer wrote as well as produced, seems like it will have plenty of depth to its characters with the inspiration it has taken from Schumer's life. While Schumer's relationship with her mom may be part of the drama of the show, the romance will likely be a lighter aspect of Life & Beth. Schumer has demonstrated her dramatic acting chops previously in The Humans, so it's clear that she can rise to the challenge of balancing the tone of the upcoming show.
