Aminuddin is now in the phase of “reconnecting” with Umno, which is motivated by his top priority: how the state government can benefit the masses.

NEGRI Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun is the epitome of a “been there, done that” Malaysian politician.

“I was also from Umno but I quit in 1998. So now we have just started to get to know [the ‘spouse’, Barisan Nasional], smiling at each other and eating with each other – that is the phase we are in.In 2018, after Pakatan won the general elections, the former officer of the then Anti-Corrup-tion Agency was appointed as the Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar.

He admits that it will not be easy to get the Umno grassroots to vote for coalition candidates from DAP.“To me, DAP has the right to fight for their race – in their hearts, there will be priorities. But their ways and their manners may be unbecoming. However, I see that DAP has come to understand ,” says Aminuddin.

Despite us being in the Opposition then, Negri Sembilan was the first state to be able to exit the pandemic phase and with the highest percentage of vaccine-receivers. I had to take care of the relationship with the then Federal Government in a good manner. When I first took over the state, I saw many villages which had been left to rot, with empty houses abandoned by those who had migrated to the cities. I did not want to see abandoned villages and dead towns.

We focus on this matter when we develop the state and bring in foreign investments. From the period of post-Covid-19 till now, we have received more than RM5bil worth of investments in the state. We have only come to know about this from informants because the illegal mines are in the rural interiors. These illegal miners told the villagers that they were cultivating durian farms instead. The seat distribution process is in its end stages. On our part as Pakatan, there is no demand. We only asked that the status quo be maintained. The Pakatan and Barisan Presidential Council will decide and we will all abide by the decisions.
