Amid warnings from ERCOT, San Antonio’s CPS Energy says its power plants fully operational

In a report issued Monday, ERCOT said demand for power this summer is expected to shatter that record. The Summer Seasonal Assessment of Resource Adequacy report said Texans could use as much as 77,317 megawatts a day at the season’s peak. But officials said they anticipate being able to meet the demand.State officials said six power plants went offline over the weekend. ERCOT on Wednesday will publish a report detailing which facilities experienced outages.
Since a winter storm in February 2021 that led to blackouts statewide, ERCOT has undergone a number of reforms, including new requirements for power generators to report unplanned outages. ERCOT also reduced the market price cap to $5,000 from $9,000 and tweaked rules so prices move up faster and prompt more generation to come onto the grid sooner.
CPS now distributes electricity through about 700 circuits across its service area, with most serving several thousand households and businesses.
