TikTok users are fleeing the app ahead of its scheduled shutdown in the United States, turning to Chinese competitor Xiaohongshu (RedNote). The move is seen as a protest against the ban, with many users embracing #TikTokRefugees and migrating to the platform.

American TikTokers are migrating to another Chinese social media platform, Xiaohongshu , also known as 'RedNote', in anticipation of TikTok's ban in the United States. Scheduled to be shut down on January 19th, TikTok faces national security and user privacy concerns, leading to its potential removal from app stores. While existing users might continue accessing the app, the lack of security updates will likely degrade user experience over time.

This shift towards RedNote is seen as a protest against the US government's decision to ban TikTok. American creators, labelling themselves #TikTokRefugees, are actively encouraging their followers to join them on the platform, headquartered in Shanghai. The hashtag #TikTokRefugee has garnered over 60 million views and 1.7 million comments, reflecting the widespread sentiment among users. One Xiaohongshu user, Heather Roberts, expressed frustration in a video message, stating, 'Our government is out of their minds if they think we’re going to stand for this TikTok ban. We're just going to a new Chinese app, and here we are,' which has garnered over 45,000 likes.RedNote, often described as a Chinese equivalent to Instagram with a layout resembling Pinterest, has witnessed a surge in downloads from US users fleeing TikTok. The platform has been a popular marketing tool in China, serving as a de facto search engine for young women seeking travel tips, cosmetic and restaurant recommendations. Interestingly, President-elect Donald Trump's popularity on TikTok seems to have influenced his stance on the ban. In a post on Truth Social, Trump questioned the need to get rid of TikTok, highlighting his engagement data on the platform.
