Nobody needs 306 types of yogurt or 20 candidates for president, writes Joe Queenan

This newspaper recently reported that yogurt sales are dropping in the U.S., in part because consumers are tired of trying to decide which of 306 distinct types of yogurt to buy.

In an era when people are constantly talking about trying to make their lives simpler, a new wave of Icelandic, Greek and French yogurts isn’t helping. And even though I have personally found that Bulgarian yogurt boasts astonishing digestive-tract curative powers, there are limits to how many exotic dairy products one society needs.
