Dedicated rescue teams and volunteers have managed to save at least 130 pilot whales which stranded themselves on a beach in Western Australia on Thursday.

A marine expert has put forward a theory about why a large number of pilot whales may have stranded themselves on a beach in Western Australia on Anzac Day as authorities confirm at least 130 animals were saved.

Many whales were able to be held out in waist deep water and led back to the remainder of the pod offshore. Picture: Facebook / Parks and Wildlife Service Western Australia “Many of these animals were able to be kept in relatively deeper waters … waist, shoulder deep waters. She also said researchers are still unclear as to exactly why whales get themselves stranded.

“What might happen is those signals might not actually get back to the animal to indicate that they are getting close to shore. Because the angle of the seabed is so gentle, they might not know how shallow it is.Dr Jolliffe said marine animals used to deep water are not familiar with tides and near shore current systems which could also impact their behaviour.Members of the public are being advised to take extra caution in the area due to an increased risk of shark activity after the stranding.
