Rugby union authorities are facing a second major lawsuit as group of more than 55 former amateur players have begun legal action against the RFU, the WRU and World Rugby
Group includes retired female players and former youth players
The group includes retired female internationals, elite players from the amateur era, former youth players, and the family of one deceased male player who was diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy postmortem. The action is separate to the case involving a group of 225 former professional union players, which is already under way.
It will apply across the community game – clubs, schools, colleges and universities at both age-grade and adult levels – covering the National One division and below in the men’s game and Championship One and below in the women’s game. “Tackles must be made at the line of the waist and below. The aim is to put players’ heads in the safest possible place by defining in law where the line of the tackle may start.
Former amateur rugby player Alexander Abbey is among the 55 players launching their legal action on Thursday.“When you got knocked out, they picked you up and poured a bucket of water on your head, or put a cold sponge down your back, and you woke up, and if you could walk in a straight line you carried on playing, and if you couldn’t walk in a straight line they took you to the sideline until you could.
