Brittany Baldwin, a fourth-grade teacher at Meridiana Elementary School, received the"Heart and Sole" grant on April 24 from the Alvin ISD Education Foundation.Sheri Dominique, a counselor at Shirley Dill Brothers Elementary School in Pearland, had some ideas for ways to help kids at the school who are plagued with anxieties or need mentors to encourage and motivate them.

. The money will go to implement initiatives that support students achievement during the 2023-2024 school year across 33 Alvin ISD schools. The grant will help her create calming stations in classrooms that will have books and sensory items such as weighted stuffed animals, stress balls and visual sensory apps on a laptop, said Dominique.She also received a $336.29 grant for"Bearkat Village," a planned mentoring program for at-risk students at the school.

The hydroponics kits will allow students to learn science and empathy because they're taking care of a living organism, said Cantu. Her older elementary students will research hydroponics and utilize NASA information about Mars to create a garden that could be sustained on that planet.
