The High Court in Shah Alam ruled that the Malaysian government and political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda must pay over RM9 million to the family of Altantuya Shaariibuu, the late Mongolian model, for her tragic murder in 2006.

The High Court in Shah Alam ordered both the Malaysian government and political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda to pay over RM9 million to the family of Altantuya Shaariibuu , the late Mongolian model, on February 12th. Judicial commissioner M Sumathi ruled that the payments, which include interest and costs, be deposited into the stakeholder account of Altantuya’s father, Dr. Shaariibuu Setev’s solicitors, within 30 days.

Altantuya’s family lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, stated that the court mandated both defendants to contribute RM4,702,054.80, representing half the total judgment sum plus accrued interest and an additional RM25,000 in costs, to the law firm Karpal Singh & Co. This payment is to be made within the 30-day period starting today, pending the outcome of the appeals scheduled at the Court of Appeal on May 19th.The Shaariibuu family, comprising Altantuya’s parents, Dr. Shaariibuu Setev and Altantsetseg Sanjaa, along with their grandson, Mugunshagai Bayarjargal, filed a RM100 million lawsuit on June 4th, 2007. The suit named two former members of the Special Action Unit (UTK), Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, as well as Abdul Razak and the Malaysian government as defendants. On December 16th, 2014, Judge Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, currently a Judge at the Court of Appeal, ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and ordered the defendants to jointly pay general, severe, and exemplary damages amounting to RM5 million to the family. The Shaariibuu family argued that Altantuya’s death caused them immense mental shock and psychological trauma, justifying the award of exemplary and severe damages. The tragic murder of Altantuya, 28, occurred on October 18th, 2006. Investigations revealed that her body was brutally detonated using C4 explosives in a jungle located in Puncak Alam, on the outskirts of Shah Alam, Selangor. Azilah and Sirul were initially found guilty and sentenced to death for Altantuya’s murder in 2009. However, their convictions were overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2013 but were subsequently reinstated by the Federal Court in 2015. Last year, the Federal Court commuted Azilah’s death sentence, replacing it with a 40-year prison term and 12 strokes of the rotan. In contrast, Sirul fled to Australia before the final verdict was announced and was detained for overstaying a tourist visa. He currently resides in Australia after his release from detention in 2023
