HANOI: The death toll in the aftermath of a typhoon in Vietnam climbed to 233 on Friday (Sept 13) as rescue workers recovered more bodies from areas hit by landslides and flash floods, state media reported.
ALOR GAJAH : A 34-year-old babysitter has been charged with the murder of an eight-month-old infant at a daycare centre in Taman Kelemak Utama here.
No plea was entered when Nor Afifah Abdullah Suhaimi was charged before Magistrate Dr Teoh Shu Yee on Friday as murder cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or imprisonment for between 30 and 40 years with no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.The accused, a mother of three, is alleged to have caused the infant's death at the Anak Pintar Soleha Child Care Centre at KM32, Jalan Kelemak Utama, between 7.30am and 8.30am on Sept 6.
Melaka prosecution director Ahmad Sazali Omar did not offer any bail for the accused, who was represented by lawyer Hermes Media Putra Ibrahim.The baby died shortly after he was sent to a nursery in Alor Gajah here by his mother and grandfather at 7.05am that day.The baby was rushed to Hospital Alor Gajah, where he was pronounced dead.Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah told the media that a post-mortem found the baby had died of suffocation.
