Nearly half of all passengers killed on U.S. roads in 2021 were not wearing a seatbelt — the highest number in a decade, data shows.

The report comes as NHTSA kicks off its annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign "to encourage drivers and passengers to buckle up, reminding everyone that seat belts save lives." For traffic crashes in 2021, 60% of pickup drivers who were killed were unrestrained, compared to 49% of SUV drivers, 47% of passenger car drivers, and 44% of van drivers, the report said.
“We need to be doing everything that we can to prevent fatalities and seat belts can make a big difference if you survive a crash or not,” Cicchino said. “We also need to be looking at what we can do to bring down speeding and also bring things down like alcohol impaired driving – all of those things can contribute to your risk of dying in the crash.”
