Since starting at Almira, implementing the Zuri Academy as part of Almira’s after-school program has been one of Ms. Graham’s most important endeavors, helping to instill self-awareness and self-confidence in girls of all ages.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – About 15 girls form a circle around Ms. Christian Graham in Almira Elementary’s media center after school, listening intently as she welcomes them to the first meeting of the Zuri Academy.
From introducing the girls to relaxing music to helping them design vision boards to introducing them to cosmetology, Ms. Graham has exposed her pupils to multiple forms of self-care. She wants to make sure she keeps an open line of communication, something that the girls may not have at home, she says.
Cassie is usually more reserved, picking and choosing when she interacts. She’s a smart student, who participates in class as needed and completes her work.
