The play, written by Galveston native Molly Beach Murphy, tells the true story of a middle-aged female bank robber in North Texas.
Playwright and Galveston native Molly Beach Murphy, who created “Cowboy Bob” with Jeanna Phillips and Annie Tippe, friends from the downtown New York theater scene, sees the play as a chance to explore the idea of who gets access to the American dream, not to mention Texans’ abiding love of outlaws.
Friday’s premiere marks the culmination of a process that began in 2016 and has been through “maybe 10, 12” workshops and other developmental steps, Murphy figures. She got connected with the Alley through a previous play, “Ike,” a retelling of Voltaire’s “Candide” set in the days after the September 2008 hurricane that devastated Galveston Island. Murphy recalls how the National Guard set up headquarters in the Academy parking lot on Seawall Boulevard.
After consuming hours of TV episodes, podcasts, and news articles about Peggy Jo’s case, Murphy and her collaborators were really no closer to understanding why Peggy Jo did what she did. They sidestepped the issue by creating the character of Rena, whom Murphy named after her great-grandmother. “For Rena, Peggy Jo’s story kind of breaks open ‘Should I maybe get out of here?’ Murphy says. “And not to give it away, but Rena starts taking steps to get out of here.”
