With Allen Greene’s tenure officially at an end, Auburn athletics chief operating officer Marcy Girton takes the reins as the department’s acting athletics director.
Greene was tabbed as the 15th athletics director in program history in 2018, succeeding Jay Jacobs in that role. Auburn hired Greene from Buffalo, where he spent two-plus years in the same role before coming to the Plains as the program’s first Black athletics director.
“Since January 2018, you have welcomed Christy and me and our children into your family,” Greene said. “Together we have celebrated tremendous victories, made lifelong friends and created memories that will last a lifetime. As our time at Auburn Athletics comes to an end, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude. To the Auburn student-athletes who compete valiantly and represent this wonderful institution with class, thank you.
During Greene’s time as AD, Auburn teams won eight conference titles, the men’s basketball team made its first-ever appearance in the Final Four and climbed to No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time in school history. Auburn also secured the long-term future of the men’s basketball program, locking coach Bruce Pearl into an eight-year extension this spring. Auburn baseball also made two trips to the College World Series -- both coming in the last three years, including a trip to Omaha, Neb.
Greene was also responsible for the hiring of football coach Bryan Harsin away from Boise State, taking control of the process in a power tussle with influential boosters. He also hired women’s basketball coach Johnnie Harris last year.
