Novak Djokovic chases a second consecutive and an eighth overall title in Melbourne, while Dominic Thiem looks for a first Grand Slam title
The latter capitulated in straight sets against Djokovic on Thursday, as the Serb extended his lead in the all-time series over the Swiss to 27-23. Djokovic has now defeated Federer in their last six meetings in a Grand Slam but had to dig deep in the first set, when he found himself 4-1 and 40-0 down to Federer.
"He started well, I was nervous. Respect to Roger for coming out tonight. He was obviously hurt and wasn't close to his best in terms of movement. Djokovic has lost just three matches at Melbourne Park in the past 10 years and will look to extend his dominance on Sunday against Thiem, who reached the Australian Open final for the first time in his career.
Having played two tie-breaks to beat Nadal in four sets in the quarterfinals, Thiem needed two more in the semifinal and admitted fatigue was an issue early in the match against Zverev.
