Seven Salt Lake City elementary schools will be studied in coming weeks for possible closure, school board members decided Tuesday, as the capital city district grapples with steadily declining enrollment.
Salt Lake City school board vice president Bryce Williams and Superintendent Elizabeth Grant listen to Emerson parent Joey McNamee speak during public comment at a board meeting on Aug. 1, 2023.
Some sat in striped chairs, while others filled the rest of the room standing. They brought lawn signs — “Keep Emerson Elementary OPEN” — and wore T-shirts showing support for their schools. The vote also means the district will begin studying the remaining 20 elementary schools for potential boundary changes, if any, if not all, of the seven schools were to close.
Out of all 27 elementary schools that were originally studied, those seven were ranked the lowest by the district committee, under factors that included safe walking routes, the ages of the buildings and enrollment numbers. The board’s vote signified the start of the district’s minimum 120-day notice period to parents and students that it may decide to close their school at the end of that time.
