With mesmerizing videos, Alia Mohamed transports her audiences to another time and place with both her music and fashion choices.

At first glance, Alia Mohamed’s Instagram account appears like a fantastical throwback, reminiscent of Middle Eastern record covers and black-and-white movies of the ’50s and ’60s. In one post, the Los Angeles–based belly dancer and artist is pictured in full belly dance gear, sporting a bedazzled gold bikini top and a glinting headpiece. In another, a trippy video of the artist playing a theremin and dressed in a pink caftan is on loop.

Mohamed cites lesser-known Arab musicians of the ’70s like Omar Khorshid and Elias Rahbani as her main inspiration, as well as more popular names of the same time period, like Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Abdel Halim Hafez from the ’50s and ’60s, who are both from Egypt. “With older music, you have these live orchestras and instrumentation and it has so much soul,” says Mohamed.

Mohamed has collaborated with several other designers and musicians since. One frequent collaborator is Iranian Los Angeles–based artist and designer Hushidar Mortezaie. He made the custom mesh gold pieces Mohamed wore for Electric Hamsa, an Arab futurist event in Dallas, the artist’s hometown, back in January. More recently she worked with Mortezaie and DJ Shiva on a video art piece inspired by ’80s Persian infomercials.
