The Dodgers’ rookie pitcher may have aced his audition for a leading role in October.
LOS ANGELES – The Dodgers salvaged one game of their series with Atlanta Sunday – and, OK, Dodger fan, maybe you’re not so eagerBut there’s still time to get things straightened out. And there were two tremendously positive developments concerning Dodger pitching Sunday afternoon.
Miller left with a 2-1 lead after throwing 96 pitches, 66 for strikes. He hit 100.1 with his four-seam fastball and averaged 98.1, and he also mixed in enough changeups and two-seamers to keep a team that had scored 18 runs in the first three games of the series off balance. Miller is now 9-3, with a 3.80 ERA. More to the point, from his Dodger debut – an 8-1 victory May 23 in Atlanta in which he threw 99 pitches in five innings and gave up five hits and a run – to now, there has been growth.
Simplicity works, although it’s best not to keep it too simple. Roberts talked about how “when you can go 100 miles an hour, I think you feel at times you can bully guys … you want the situation to be over. And you just kind of throw as hard you can and hope that it ends the at-bat. “I kind of just watch how they go about their work and ask the questions that I should be asking,” he said. “I’ll ask certain guys, ‘Hey, how do you find the edge to keep pushing when your stuff’s not your best? Like when you’re not at your best, when you’re not feeling your best. How do you find the edge to just keep going and get through that lineup, you know?’
