Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing backlash over his social media response to the Matildas’ World Cup semi-final defeat with fans demanding the government splash cash on women’s football.

After dealing with weeks of platitudes, Australian fans demanded the Prime Minister put his money where his mouth is and fund the sport.

Similar messages flooded Twitter with dozens of simple “fund the game” tweets riddled throughout the replies to Mr Albanese’s post. “You called for a public holiday - ergo you jinxed them - your fault mate - what were you thinking??!!” a Twitter user joked. In the 2023-24 financial year the Australian Sports Commission has earmarked $5.3 million compared to $8 million for basketball, $6.7 million for hockey, $10 million for cycling and $11 million for rowing.

“You know, comparison to other sports isn’t really good enough and hopefully this tournament kind of changes that because that’s the legacy you leave, not what you do on the pitch,” Kerr said after the game on Wednesday night.
