A new consultation paper on how Australians should pay for aged care has been called a “landmark” move towards greater user pays’ pricing. auspol
Nursing home providers have backed a new Albanese government consultation paper that floats making elderly Australians pay more from their own pocket for aged care as part of efforts to relieve pressure on taxpayers.
Aged and Community Care Providers Association chief executive Tom Symondson said the issues paper was a “landmark” for the Labor government to raise the prospect of greater user-pays pricing. “But we’re not fairly distributing the taxpayer subsidies. If you have a significant amount sitting in your super account, why shouldn’t you contribute more to your care?”Catholic Health Australia chief Pat Garcia said he supported the draft strategy’s call for “fair and reasonable consumer contributions” where appropriate.
He said deregulating fees would allow those residents who could afford it to contribute to their care, with a safety net for poorer residents.
