The first National Cabinet featuring a Labor premier from every mainland state will be held on Friday as Anthony Albanese expressed his confidence in a 'better future for our federation'.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has flagged this week's National Cabinet meeting will pave the way for a"better future for our federation".

Friday's National Cabinet will mark the first occasion every mainland premier in attendance is a Labor politician. Mr Albanese said health and housing will also be at the top of the meeting agenda as the federal government puts the finishing touches on its budget. "One of the things that you will see at National Cabinet tomorrow, I'm very confident will provide a framework for a better future for our federation," he said. "Healthcare will be on the agenda, as will housing issues and other issues in which we need that co-operation between states, greater consistency, but also that co-operation between the federal government and the state government.
