Anthony Albanese will spend the next six days simultaneously trying to stabilise the relationship with Beijing and strengthen economic and strategic ties with nations which increasingly regard China as an adversary.

While in Manila, Mr Albanese and Filipino President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos are expected to announce an upgrade in the bilateral strategic and economic relationship, and possibly the details of joint patrols of the South China Sea.China is becoming increasingly aggressive to Filipino fishing and other vessels in the South China Sea.

“It might diminish some interest the media might have but as such China as a country is attending even if President Xi may not be, and I’m sure the Chinese voice will be there during the deliberations in the form of whomever might be representing the country,” he said. “We speak regularly about these issues. We are under no pressure from our partners to do anything specific,” he said.
