A prominent Northern Territory politician has claimed the Prime Minister ignored his pleas for more boots on the ground and another has accused Albanese of inaction as the Alice Springs crime wave spirals out of control.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the central Australian town – currently in the grips of a crime wave – and announced a suite of measures on Tuesday aimed at easing the crisis.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been criticised by local politicians for his inaction in Alice. Picture: Liam Mendes / The Australian Alice Springs Mayor Matt Paterson echoed Mr Burgoyne’s calls for more action when speaking to Sky News’ Chris Kenny later in the evening. Mr Albanese pledged an additional $14.2 million for high visibility police operations but said in his Tuesday press conference that additional assistance for local police forces in Alice Springs was “not something that was advocated”.“I spoke to the Prime Minister when he was in town on Tuesday and made the request that we certainly need more boots on the ground,” he said.
The reinstatement of alcohol bans in the community remains on the table, with Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles suggesting a formal vote could be held by the Australian Electoral Commission on whether communities want to opt-in to the measure.

Albanese to visit Alice Springs as crime crisis overshadows Voice to ParliamentThe Indigenous Voice to Parliament debate this week has been overshadowed by the spiralling crime crisis in Alice Springs, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese set to visit the town today. Support for the Voice has dropped from 53 per cent at the end of last year to 47 per cent. Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor suggests the crisis is a further reason to push the Voice, considering previous attempts in the past at reducing alcohol-fuelled violence have failed. If the referendum succeeds, it will be the fourth attempt in 50 years to establish a representative Indigenous body to advise the federal government, with one of the key criticisms of the proposal being the so-called lack of detail.

Anthony Albanese calls for government ‘cooperation’ to deal with Alice Springs crime wavePrime Minister Anthony Albanese says he wants to make sure there is cooperation between the state and federal governments to deal with the crime wave in Alice Springs. The Prime Minister arrived in Alice Springs on Tuesday after pressure to intervene and help solve the rampant crime taking place in the Northern Territory town. He said these are “complex problems” which require full solutions. “We’ve agreed to establish a central Australian Regional Controller and that person will be Dorrelle Anderson,” Mr Albanese said during a media conference in Alice Springs. “Dorrelle is the right person for the job, someone who is experienced and someone familiar with this local community, but someone who will have responsibility to make sure we get federal and state programs coordinated in the best possible way. “To make sure they are the most effective but also they provide for the best use of taxpayers dollars to make a substantial difference.”
