Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Liberals’ position undermined “some of the fear campaign that is there about the impact of the Voice.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Peter Dutton is being disingenuous in opposing enshrining a first nations voice in the Constitution because he essentially supports all the elements of Labor’s approach.

Senator Birmingham said the Liberals’ approach would provide a “proof of concept” and build up people’s confidence that the model could make a long-run meaningful difference to addressing indigenous disadvantage.“I didn’t want to see a referendum put that will fail. Sadly, this government appears to have mismanaged the process in a way where this referendum looks likely to fail, and I think that is a sad occasion for the country,” he said.

“The primacy of parliament is enshrined,” he said. “What’s permanent, is that there is a body ... The only difference [between the Liberal and Labor positions] is whether the body can be abolished with the stroke of a pen.”
