The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Alaska's previous campaign contribution limits in 2021.
Citizens Against Money in Politics is an Alaska group backing a ballot initiative that would put the question of individual-to-campaign contribution limits before voters on the upcoming 2024 ballot.“We’re a statewide group leading a ballot measure initiative to reinstate political campaign contribution limits,” CAMP Volunteer Coordinator Jus Tavcar said in a Wednesday interview.
The dollar limit ebbed and flowed over the years, and statute also looped in ceilings for other kinds of contributions. Three gubernatorial candidates in the 2022 election received major contributions from individuals that well exceeded the old contribution limits, the Alaska Beacon reported“In our group, we believe that money doesn’t equal speech,” Tavcar said. “I think having those caps present gives people a feeling like they can contribute — no matter whether they can contribute $5, $10 — and not be discouraged when a millionaire contributes $100,000 to their friend or relative or whatever.
Not only adjusting for inflation, CAMP’s initiative would also increase the starting point for the limits from the preceding law and change the corresponding timespan.
