Alabama’s red snapper season to open May 27, state announces.

Red snapper season opens May 27, 2022, for private anglers.Alabama’s 2022 red snapper season will start May 27, state officials have announced.

According to information published by the Marine Resources Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the season for private anglers will consist of four-day weekends, Friday through Monday, continuing until the private quota is reached. The quota for 2022 has not been set. Alabama’s 2021 quota for private anglers and charter boats was 1,122,622 pounds. Anglers did not reach it,“The season dates listed above only apply to anglers fishing from shore, private recreational vessels and state-licensed Alabama commercial party boats that do not hold federal for-hire fishing permits,” said the ADCNR announcement.

The daily bag limit will be two red snapper per person, per day, with a minimum size limit of 16 inches total length. A change in place for the 2022 season is that all vessels fishing for reef fish in federal waters are required to have a venting tool or descending device rigged and ready to use.
