The automotive industry powered Alabama’s exports in 2021 back above the level the state enjoyed before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2019 total for Alabama was $20.8 billion, before the global pandemic bit into exports of goods in 2020, which totaled $17.13 billion.“We are very pleased to see that our optimism at this time a year ago was well-founded,” Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement. “This is a promising sign that demand for Alabama-made goods and services remains strong, and that Alabama has an integral role to play in the worldwide recovery.

The state’s auto industry was the catalyst behind much of the growth, with transportation equipment jumping more than 25% to reach $10.35 billion. Overseas shipments of motor vehicles were up 38.4%, while exports of ships and boats jumped 40% last year. That was good news after a 17% decline in 2020.

“It is critical that we build on the successes of 2021 in order to keep the momentum going,” Alabama Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield said.
