Alabama lawmakers on Tuesday passed a bill that would make it illegal to hold a cellphone while driving under certain circumstances and with exceptions.
The vote came on the last day of the legislative session. The bill, SB301, by Sen. Jabo Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, goes to Gov. Kay Ivey, who could sign it into law.The bill says it would be illegal for a driver to physically hold a cellphone while their vehicle “crosses in or out of a traffic lane without using a turn signal, the vehicle swerves, or the vehicle is otherwise operated in an impaired manner.
A driver would face a $50 fine on the first violation. Police could issue a ticket only as a secondary violation, meaning that they stopped the driver for another violation, such as speeding.
