The Alabama Republican Party denied election contests in state legislator races in Etowah County after hearings were held Saturday. With the contests denied, Mack Butler is the GOP nominee in House District 28, and Mark Gidley is the nominee in House District 29. In announcing the results of the hearings, the party made no comment beyond saying the contests had been denied.
The issue in both races was that some voters were given the wrong ballots. Some voters in District 28 received ballots for District 29 and vice versa. Election officials, including Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill, said there isThe losers in the two races – Gil Isbell in District 28 and Jamie Grant in District 29 – both said theIn District 28, Butler, a former state legislator, received 52% of the vote to defeat Isbell, the incumbent. The winning margin was 219 votes.
