What happened to Ahsoka's iconic lightsaber style?
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Ahsoka episode 5 brought The Clone Wars to live-action in two epic flashback sequences, and while the attention to detail in the scenes was admirable, there was one big problem that didn’t line up with the animation. In the present, Ahsoka Tano floats in the seas of Seatos and has a sort of pseudo-vision where she fights Anakin Skywalker in the World Between Worlds.
In the flashbacks, Ariana Greenblatt plays young Ahsoka as she fights in the Battle of Ryloth and the Siege of Mandalore. In the Battle of Ryloth, Ahsoka ignites her classic green lightsaber to fight alongside the clones of the 501st. Whereas in the Siege of Mandalore, Ahsoka uses the two blue sabers Anakin gifted her. Both battles showcase Ahsoka’s agile use of Form V—also known as Djem So—which is the same style Anakin uses.
Young Ahsoka Is Using The Wrong Lightsaber Form In Ahsoka episode 5’s Clone Wars flashbacks, young Ahsoka does not hold her lightsabers with a reverse grip. Ahsoka’s trademark lightsaber form during The Clone Wars is the Shien style, which favors a reverse grip on her lightsabers. While Ahsoka is fluent in both Djem So—with a traditional lightsaber grip—and Shein, she heavily favored the backward style of the lightsaber throughout almost every season of The Clone Wars.
The reason Ahsoka favored Shien in The Clone Wars so much is because it was fantastic for blocking blaster bolts, which was something she needed to do constantly in order to survive. Dave Filoni’s decision not to have young Ahsoka hold her lightsabers in the same reverse grip she uses in the animation drives home the fact that these flashbacks aren’t real.
