A sign dedicates a sunflower garden to the memory of Ahmaud Arbery at Echo Park in Los Angeles, California.I cannot stop thinking about the fear Arbery must have felt when he realized he was being followed by two white men in a truck . I cannot stop thinking about the terror that must have gripped him when he realized that they were brandishing guns.
I cannot stop wondering what the racialized murder of Ahmaud Arbery means for all runners in this country. I cannot stop thinking about the way in which this will underscore and augment the fear and terror so many black runners and runners of color already feel. I cannot stop thinking about how hideous moments like this illuminate the poison in the sweet, camaraderie-filled runs I take around my neighborhood.
This separation, this cordoning off, is precisely why the murder of Ahmaud Arbery must be a central issue for the entire running community. If our sport, our hobby, our passion, our lifestyle, our daily practice is safer or less safe depending on how white you look, then the whole endeavor is poisoned.
