AGL Energy has appointed acting chief executive Damien Nicks to the role permanently, tasking him with getting the near 200-year-old company’s transition away from fossil fuels back on track after a tumultuous 2022.
Mr Nicks had declared his interest in the taking on the role full-time and has led the company’s revised strategy to hasten its exit from fossil fuels, which AGL chairman Patricia McKenzie said had impressed the board, Mike Cannon-Brookes, AGL’s largest shareholder with more than 11 per cent of the company through his Grok Ventures investment vehicle, has led a vocal campaign for AGL to exit coal by 2035.
Mr Cannon-Brookes has used his outsized influence to disrupt some of the energy giant’s plans, most notably a demerger of generation assets from retail.Mr Nicks joined AGL in March 2013 and was chief financial officer from August 2018 before becoming interim CEO on October 1 last year.
