KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General (AG)'s Chambers did not authorise any wiretapping that resulted in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)'s infamous nine recordings, says Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.
He told the High Court at the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial here on Monday while the AG is empowered to authorise a lawful interception of phone conversations, no permission was sought by MACC for the wiretaps.
The former AG was under examination-in-chief by lead defence counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who questioned him on the legality of the recordings implicating several high-profile figures, including Datuk Seri Najib Razak.Shafee: Has the MACC ever come to you for authorisation on wiretapping?Shafee: So that never happened with any authority from you.The witness also said he was asked to give a statement on the recordings at Bukit Aman.
Last Thursday , former MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya was grilled by Shafee on the recordings. On Jan 8, the MACC held a press conference to reveal leaked audio clips which implicated high-ranking officials, including Najib, in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad and SRC International scandals.
Najib is facing seven charges – three for criminal breach of trust, one for abuse of power and three for money laundering involving SRC International funds totalling RM42mil.
