SF Giants’ Farhan Zaidi says a Joc Pederson extension is a possibility
SAN FRANCISCO — Wilmer Flores’ announced contract extension on Monday put to rest any concern about the Giants’ most consistent player’s future. It also opened up questions about talks with the team’s other impending free agents.
By pitching at least 110 innings, Rodón enacted a clause in his two-year, $44 million contract that allows him to opt-out after this year. The contract structure “complicates the sequencing” of any discussions, Zaidi said. But the team was encouraged to hear that Rodónin returning to the Bay Area. Rodón is putting up Cy Young worthy numbers, a league-best 2.33 FIP and a 2.93 ERA with 212 strikeouts.
Despite a lengthy homer-less streak spanning between July and August, Pederson leads the Giants with 22 home runs and has been one of their more electric offensive players. Zaidi said “it’s possible” the team and Pederson can agree to an extension before the offseason begins. As for Brandon Belt, San Francisco will wait and see how he recovers from knee surgery to determine a possible reunion with the career Giant. An internal goal to skew younger in these transition years may mean 25-year-old David Villar takes over for Evan Longoria, who has a $13 million club option, at third base next year. But Zaidi kept the opportunity for the 37-year-old’s return open.
