After Uvalde, poll finds Dallas residents want special session, background checks

Sen. Ted Cruz suggested on Fox News that schools should have “one door into and out of the school, and have ... armed police officers at that door.” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick joined in, telling Tucker Carlson, “We have to harden these targets so no one can get in, ever, except through one entrance.”“Say an intruder comes into the school, and if we only have one way in and one way out, that’s another tragedy,” said 53-year-old Ruby Adaway, a teacher’s assistant from Oak Cliff.

Norwood, a retired nurse and resident of Oak Cliff who identifies as a Democrat, said she has worked as a substitute teacher and strongly opposes the presence of armed staff in schools. McWilliams, a North Dallas retiree, said he hated the idea of armed people in schools “because it can go sideways,” but saw the presence of a trained armed staff member and additional measures such as metal detectors as necessary.Michael James, 49, who identifies as independent, also was opposed to armed teachers, and questioned how that would be paid for when many teachers already have to buy their own supplies.

“I don’t believe it’s necessary for anyone to own a weapon that dispenses that many rounds,” he said.
