Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw tendered her resignation as the city’s top cop to take a job as the deputy chief security officer of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, various media outlets reported. Outlaw’s last day will be Sept. 22. Outlaw’s tenure began in February 2020, and her departure comes after slightly more than 3.5 years on the job.

She was touted by city leadership as the first black female police commissioner in the city’s history.Philadelphia was founded in 1682. According to all available records, the city set a record for the number of homicides under her watch in 2021 and fell just short of that record again in 2022. During her three and a half years as commissioner, Outlaw oversaw the city’s top two highest homicide totals.

Still, Outlaw was the city’s top cop, and her performance didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Objectively, it’s a bit puzzling that she would get any job in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan areas, given the difficulties she faced in Philadelphia, a region with a smaller population.
