Two years ago, millions of gallons of water eroded the main spillway of the nation’s largest dam. As early as next week, a newly repaired concrete spillway could face its first major test.
The reservoir, a key stockpile of California’s water supply, has risen significantly following several storms in the past month and is currently at 845 feet. That is still more than 50 feet below the top of the lake, but it is near the level where some water should be released to maintain capacity for future runoff from storms and, eventually, melting snow from the Sierra Nevada.
The area surrounding the reservoir has received nearly 37 inches of rain since October, pushing the region to 150% of normal for the water year, according to the National Weather Service. The water year runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. “We’ve used all the best available science and data and engineering practices of the day,” Mellon said.required pouring more than 1.2 million cubic yards of concrete — enough to fill 372 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The main spillway alone contains enough concrete to build a sidewalk from Oroville to Amarillo, Texas.
The reconstructed spillway can handle water flowing at a rate of 270,000 cubic feet per second, which Mellon said is much greater than the amount officials would ever expect to release at a time.when the spillway began disintegrating on Feb. 7, 2017,
