“We lived just like this,” she said in Spanish, pointing to the towering pine trees abundant in the area and the quiet street in front of her home. Life here was much calmer — and far more affordable — than the sprawling metropolis less than an hour’s drive away. And she liked it that way. But before the shooting, the manhunt and the media frenzy that ensued, Trails End was a haven for Latin American transplants such as Guzman, Rivera and other families in the neighborhood looking for a better life in the United States, residents said.The rural charm isn’t the only reason Rivera and her husband, Lalo Vazquez, moved to Trails End.
Many in the neighborhood were scared after the shooting, Osorio said, but he thinks life in Trails End has mostly returned to normal.Jakui Vargaz, 25, said her sense of security — and her family members’ — has been shattered by the shooting. Among them are the pothole-ridden roads that, which the Eastex Advocate said have plagued the neighborhood since the 1990s.
Guns, which are commonplace in the neighborhood, have also become a concern for some locals. Multiple residents said neighbors often shoot their weapons recreationally in the wooded areas in and surrounding Trails End, just as police believe Oropeza was doing before his rampage.
