CHARLOTTE — The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team was ahead by nine points entering the fourth quarter of last season’swas one of the reasons Elizabeth Kitley, the two-time reigning ACC player of the year, postponed a professional career in the WNBA for one last crack at an NCAA title and the chance to complete the storybook ending Coach Kenny Brooks envisioned when he arrived in Blacksburg, Va., in 2016.
“We finished our season with a loss, which never feels good,” Kitley said Tuesday during ACC women’s basketball media day. “For that reason we weren’t really able to celebrate any of our accomplishments for months afterward because we’re all so competitive, and just knowing that we didn’t finish the game how we wanted was really painful, honestly. Definitely I think going into this season we all hate to lose so much, so that’s always a factor that determines how hard we play.
“After that game it was definitely emotional,” Amoore said. “We went into that locker room, obviously we were upset that we lost, but I think a lot of it was look how far we’ve come, love these girls, and look how well we did. Me, Liz and Cayla coming back, we would love to do it all again, and it’s easier said than done. I think the biggest thing I learned is if it was that easy everyone would have made the Final Four.
She’s also the only player in Virginia Tech history with a triple-double, collecting 24 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds in a victory over Nebraska in December.
