After latest blowout loss, can A’s avoid setting new Oakland record for futility at home?
OAKLAND – A’s manager Mark Kotsay speculated after his team’s 14-2 loss Thursday that the Chicago White Sox knew what was coming from Oakland starter JP Sears.
In his seventh career big league start, Sears allowed home runs to Elvis Andrus and Yoán Moncada in the first inning, then allowed another homer to Moncada in the second, a three-run shot that gave the White Sox a 6-0 lead. But the postgame focus was on Sears, who has been one of the A’s best pitchers since he came to Oakland last month as part of the Frankie Montas trade with the New York Yankees. “They hit a couple of pitches tonight … they stayed on a changeup really well, they seemed like they were on every fastball threw,” Kotsay said of the White Sox. “That’s not to make an excuse, you’ve still got to execute. But for Sears, we’re going to dive into it on our end and see what happened.”
With the loss, the A’s fell to 22-46 at the Coliseum this season, and are in real danger of finishing the year with the worst home record in Oakland history.
