In the 1850s, John Bartlett, a commissioner of the 1850–53 Joint U.S. and Mexican Boundary Commission, doubted whether people would ever settle on the border. He wrote convincingly about it in bold terms: “Is this the land we have purchased and are to survey and keep at such a cost? As far as the eye can reach, stretches one unbroken waste, barren, wild, worthless.”

Then, after the end of the Cold War, in which Mexico sought to consolidate an independent, autonomous vision through its involvement in the Non-Aligned Movement, the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994 marked a turning point. The aerospace industry in Mexico, for example, now produces everything from engines to cargo doors, fuselages, engine parts and landing gear assemblies for U.S aviation companies. A single plant in northern Chihuahua designs and produces 95% of the wiring used in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and parts for helicopters and military aircrafts are designed and built in our country.
