A sturdy bicycle that can handle rough, punishing conditions and can carry heavy loads for long distances in Africa's rugged terrain in rural areas is changing the lives of girls and women.

"In total, through our philanthropic programmes and sales to consumers and organisations, we have distributed over 755 000 Buffalo Bicycles across the world. In Africa specifically, we have distributed over 681 000 Buffalo Bicycles," says Dave Neiswander, CEO of World Bicycle Relief, a non-profit organisation that distributes bicycles in developing countries to aid poverty relief.

It wasn't until December 2004, just after the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that affected the northeastern coast of Somalia, that the idea was born seven hours later. In rural communities across Africa, people walk long distances to access hospitals, schools, marketplaces and other day-to-day needs such as water sources."Bicycles are a game-changer for remote, rural communities where, often, the only other option is to walk. With our specially designed, heavy-duty Buffalo Bicycles, people can carry 100kg on the rear carrier," said Neiswander.

When support is rendered to girls' and women's education, the rates of forced marriage, death and maternal mortality all go down.
