All AFL players, coaches and umpires will observe a moment’s silence in a statement honouring the victims of violence against women in this weekend’s round of AFL games.
The minute’s silence will take place before all nine AFL games around the country, with players, coaches and umpires to form a circle on the field, the AFL has confirmed.
“We also understand our industry still has work to do, but we are committed to continuing to educate, to take action, and even more conscious of that we must work harder than ever. All men are responsible for doing better.” The AFL’s stand was driven at club level earlier this week at the instigation of West Coast CEO Don Pyke and immediately supported by North Melbourne and then the other 16 club bosses. Pyke wrote to Dillon and football boss Laura Kane suggesting that the clubs and AFL make a gesture during this weekend’s round.
Pyke’s initiative, which was circulated in a letter to all clubs, was backed by North Melbourne chief executive Jennifer Watt, who referred to the difficulty that North Melbourne had experienced in finding appropriate services aimed at improving the behaviour of former player Tarryn Thomas.
