The AFL has responded after a security officer claimed an Israeli flag should have been confiscated when a young Jewish fan took the flag and a sign to a game in support of North Melbourne's Jewish debutant Harry Sheezel.
A young Jewish man has lashed out at an AFL security officer over"anti-Semitic" claims that an Israeli flag he brought to a game should have been confiscated or he be asked to leave.
A young fan brought an Israeli flag and the"Mazel-Tov Harry" sign to Marvel Stadium on Saturday in support of debutant Harry Sheezel. Picture: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images Under the AFL’s published Ticket and Entry Conditions for 2023, attendees agree not to bring any flags or banners with a pole exceeding 1.6 metres in length or in breach of a venue’s specific conditions of entry without the consent of the AFL.
“They loved him. They knew he wasn’t a North Melbourne supporter and said you’re welcome in the cheer squad any time. I don’t think they had a problem,” he said. The league clarified it has no issue with the Israeli flag or the sign that was brought to the ground, and the email was an"incorrect misinterpretation".
