AEP Ohio says it is improving its vegetation management practices following last summer's storms that left about 250,000 customers without power.
American Electric Power Ohio says it is stepping up its vegetation management practices and promising to do a better job of communicating with the public after severe storms in the summer forced the power company toConsumer groups, businesses and politicians echoed many residents in"We know the critical importance of reliable electric service for our customers, and we are committed to a thorough evaluation of the events that led to the emergency grid protection outages we were forced to...
"We have worked cooperatively with PJM throughout this process and are putting in place preventative measures to help reduce the impact of severe weather events on our system in the future," AEP said in its statement.Since the storms, AEP says it has used what it calls advanced laser aerial evaluation and expanded visual inspection of the transmission lines delivering power into Columbus to reduce the potential effect of future severe storm on its system.
PJM also said Thursday that it has called on AEP to better manage vegetation around its transmission system to mitigate the potential for transmission lines to sag into trees and other plant life and shut off. Beyond AEP taking steps to improve its vegetation management practices, Bielak also recommended that PJM enhance its training of its dispatchers to address scenarios of actual overloads that require power to be turned off coupled with potential cascading outages that require even more outages.
