Advent is a reminder that hope is all around us. We just need to know where to look

This season, may we look around us to the mundane, the everyday, and recognize how it is the small acts of kindness and love and compassion where God shows up

Imagine a spectrum with hope on one end and despair on the other. For the sake of this exercise, I shall define hope as an attitude or belief wherein we posses the expectation for a positive outcome in the future. Put simply: Hope believes it will get better. Whereas despair convinces us that the future holds nothing but more of the same — at best — or even greater negative outcomes.

But here’s what I find interesting in this exercise. Regardless of where you put yourself on any sort of religious or cultural or political spectrum, it seems to me that many — most? — people, should you aggregate their responses, find themselves feeling more on the hopeless end in all three categories.

Or how about some of the corporations, industries and businesses we’ve witnessed rise and fall these past several years.

I submit to you that there is a way out of this. A way to ground our hope in that which isn’t subject to the whims of the market or the corruptibility of humanity. And as mentioned, it’s found in the Christmas story.
