The federal government has approved a request for ADF assistance to evacuate about 700 people from a handful of remote communities south of Darwin that have been inundated by major flooding.
abc.net.au/news/nt-remote-communities-flooding-evacuations-adf-assistance/102043690The Australian Defence Force will provide aircraft and personnel to assist the evacuation of hundreds of residents from flooded remote communities in the Northern Territory, the federal government has confirmed.
"I've been in contact with NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles MLA to offer Federal support to keep people safe," he wrote. The residents are being flown to Katherine, then bussed to Darwin where they will be housed in temporary accommodation. It warned the river was expected to reach at least 17.5 metres later on Thursday, which BOM forecaster Shenagh Gamble said was equal with the record flood level reached in 2001.
