Fahmi Reza, a Malaysian activist and graphic designer, was arrested for a caricature deemed insulting to the appointment of the 11th Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman.
Fahmi Reza, an activist and graphic designer, was arrested following 30 police reports filed concerning a caricature deemed insulting to the appointment of the 11th Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah , Tun Musa Aman. Fahmi was detained while giving his statement at the Penampang district police headquarters around 5 pm yesterday. On December 19, Fahmi, whose real name is Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin, was also recorded at the Bukit Aman police headquarters regarding the same caricature.
Sabah Police Commissioner, Datuk Jauteh Dikun, when contacted, confirmed Fahmi's arrest. “Yes (detained) but not yet remanded,” he said. It is understood that an application for remand against the activist will be made today. The investigation against Fahmi is being conducted under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Yesterday, through a post on his Facebook page, Fahmi stated, “If I don't update before 8 pm, it means I'm sleeping in the lock-up tonight. As usual, remember we have the right to refuse to answer police questions! In a press conference yesterday, Jauteh informed that 30 police reports had been received concerning the posters depicting the caricature drawn by Fahmi regarding Tun Musa Aman which were plastered at several locations in Sabah. Fahmi has been in Sabah since Friday, believed to be attending the Aman Gempur Rasuah Sabah rally organized by the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Student Voice today in front of the Kinabalu Tower
