“I grew up believing in these sacrosanct rights that were taught to me as a citizen of the U.S.: That the criminal justice system was fair, and equality under the law was something I had access to,” Nguyen said. “I quickly found out that wasn't the case for survivors. It was rage in the beginning. That changed after I understood my story was not mine alone. Rage has a very important place in movement building, but it can’t sustain it.

As the pandemic rages on, Nguyen has pivoted her activism to help those isolated with abusers. Rise launched the Safe Haven program, asking restaurants offering takeout and other public spaces that are still open find help for domestic and sexual abuse victims if they say the codeword “RiseUp19.” This comes in response to the spike in abuse, which is unfortunately“One thing that has been sadly predictable is the rise of sexual violence during crises.
