ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury defends a meeting he attended with acting Director of Public Prosecutions Anthony Williamson, in which they discussed the prosecution rate of sexual assault cases.
ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury and acting Director of Public Prosecutions Anthony Williamson met in January to discuss the prosecution rate of sexual assault cases.
The two met on January 30 and discussed what Mr Rattenbury said were "concerns" that had been raised about the number of prosecutions being dropped. "What I said to him was that I had heard that a number of matters have been dropped and I wanted to understand more about why," he said.As part of his role as Attorney-General, Mr Rattenbury said he regularly met with the DPP to discuss "policy and operational issues"."He made some important points to me about how the decisions are taken in the office to discontinue a prosecution — he outlined the various sign-off steps.
"The actual panel was comprised of the director-general of the Justice and Community Safety Directorate, and then a director of public prosecutions from another jurisdiction, and then a former senior prosecutor from another jurisdiction," he said."I put forward to cabinet the candidates they recommended, and cabinet took that decision.
